FAOHH, TOHH, PATH & The Museum of Graffiti Throw Cultural Jam
Hayden “Vicious Teknique” Tekerman believes in graffiti. He also believes graffiti can provide Miami’s youth with career pathways in the arts and Hip Hop. This Sunday, through Fam Jam, a cultural event presented by PATH: Preserving, Archiving & Teaching Hip Hop and the Museum of Graffiti, “Tek,” as he’s known to others, will be able to help document Miami’s world-famous graffiti scene and celebrate its cultural ambassadors, in addition ushering in the next 50 years of Hip Hop.
With the help of non-profit outlet The Fine Art of Hip Hop, Tek founded the Graffiti Mural Beautification Initiative, (GMBI) an organization converting dilapidated surfaces into captivating art installations that brighten the community. Graffiti in Miami was already thriving before the foundation of the GMBI, but Fam Jam’s collaborative spirit will be something for the entire world to see.
The Museum of Graffiti is ground zero for this illustrious event, an institution that celebrates the history and impact of Graffiti Art and Hip Hop Culture. PATH: Preserving, Archiving & Teaching Hip Hop, Inc., an organization with a focus on education, is leading the event with art activations and scavenger hunts for the youth. The all-day event (11am-7pm) features music by homegrown Miami DJs and highlights DJ Ceelo.
“They used to say turn that noise down, now they’re saying turn that noise up!” —Desire Nobility One
Fam Jam promises a full lineup of Hip Hop creators and culturists featuring: Abstrk, Bboy Lego, Brimstone127, Desire Nobility One, DJ Ceelo, DJ Dot One, DJ Zeelux, Empress Life, Miss Lushy, Serum, and the aforementioned Vicious Teknique.
Tek also represents The Temple of Hip Hop, a Hip Hop preservation, ministry, archive, school, and society, as does Miami resident and Graffiti savant Desire Nobility One, who spoke about her excitement for Fam Jam and the next 50 years of Hip Hop: “They used to say turn that noise down, now they’re saying turn that noise up!”
PATH and the Museum of Graffiti were instrumental in including The Temple of Hip Hop into their foray, as Tek and Desire will receive historic 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop Proclamations from the City of Miami and Miami-Dade County at 6pm. Representing Mayor Suarez, Director of Special Projects Ms. Debbie Blas will be in attendance for the City of Miami. Miami-Dade County’s Mayor Cava will be represented by Director of Equity & Engagement Mr. Jason Smith.
Luckily, I was able to catch a quick word from Tek, who was all about gratitude: “I am greatly appreciative of PATH, the Museum of Graffiti and the Temple of Hip Hop for providing a phenomenal platform for all nine Elements of the Kulture to flourish. I am thoroughly grateful to representatives of Mayor Suarez from the City of Miami, and Miami-Dade County Mayor Cava, for their commitment to service. Together through the principles of Hip Hop we can transform our communities into a place of peace, love, unity and safely having fun.”
