Artist Profile: Exitus999

San Antonio, Texas, is a pretty trendy place right now. This past Tuesday, the Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks in a decisive 125-92 win. This is a franchise record for a season-opening game, and indicates a questionable future for a post-Dončić Dallas. In light of this win, we want to highlight another, lesser-known Alamo City sensation. Introducing: Exitus999.
In his work, Exitus999 blends the emotional flair of late-2010s SoundCloud rap with the heavily produced and memetic synths of hyperpop. The result is a sound just as “Yung Lean” as it is “100 Gecs.” High-pitched vocals somewhere between singing and rapping accompany jangly, electronic beats that feel like neon music. This is hardly even a metaphor. Exitus999’s social media is decked out with enough sky blue, neon purple, and grey to be the year 2000 all over again.
Exitus’s career has been rising gradually. His fanbase is coming together in a more streamlined way. He has yet to earn a song with over a million streams, but now has multiple in the six-digit range as well as nearly 80,000 monthly listeners. His most successful track is “back 2 me! X edm,” a remix of “back 2 me” by Diffrent and ELOQ that is on the subtler side–by hyperpop standards.
His most recent release is the Purple Lust EP, featuring a song of the same name, a fast version, and a slow version. This is one of Exitus’ more rap-based works and features discernible vocals. Despite this, all three versions of the song are very different in their vibe: the fast version is classically hyperpop and great for a nightclub. The slowed version feels more reminiscent of underground rap. Creating one song that can be turned into three more by little more than speed is quite an artistic talent. Put together, the three songs have earned over 75,000 streams.
Exitus’ Spotify description is simple and existential in nature. Whereas most artists rush to provide a bio or list their accomplishments, he asks a deep question: “Why are we meant to be here?”. Regardless of how some may answer this question, one thing is certain: Exitus has used his existence to create some banger music.
