APRA AMCOS Hits Record Revenue Amid Aussie Music Consumption Decline

Strong Growth in Revenue Despite Local Music Decline
APRA AMCOS, the Australasian rights organization, has announced a record-breaking revenue of A$857.4 million for the fiscal year, representing an 8.8% increase from the previous year. This growth was primarily driven by strong digital streaming, international licensing, and public performance revenues. Despite the positive financial outlook, the organization is grappling with a significant decline in local music consumption, with over 91% of streamed music in Australia and 96% in New Zealand being international content.
Challenges for Local Artists
The 'Digital' category, which accounts for more than 53% of the total revenue, saw a 12.5% increase, highlighting the growing influence of streaming platforms. However, the surge in international music consumption poses a challenge for local artists, who are struggling to maintain their share of the market. APRA AMCOS CEO Dean Ormston described the situation as 'devastating,' warning that without intervention, the share of Australian music in streaming could drop to around 5% within the next five years.
What this means for you
For independent artists and small labels, the data underscores the importance of diversifying revenue streams and exploring international markets. While digital streaming offers significant opportunities, it also intensifies competition from global acts. It's crucial to leverage local performance opportunities and engage with audiences through live events and community initiatives to maintain visibility and relevance.
Additionally, APRA AMCOS's active role in advocating for creators' rights in the AI space is a positive sign. As AI continues to evolve, ensuring that artists are fairly compensated for the use of their work in AI applications will be vital.
