Professional Sound Alliance Launches to Protect Sound Effects from AI Exploitation

Professional Sound Alliance Launches to Protect Sound Effects from AI Exploitation

Industry Coalition Forms to Combat Unauthorized AI Use of Sound Effects

A new coalition called the Professional Sound Alliance has been established by sound designers, recordists, and sound effects library companies. The alliance aims to address the growing issue of unlicensed use of professional sound in media production and AI applications.

The group specifically targets two types of unauthorized use: 'Data Piracy,' which involves scraping sound libraries into commercial AI models without permission, and 'Sync Piracy,' which is the unlicensed use of sounds in film, television, and games. These practices undermine the extensive work that goes into creating professional sound libraries, including field recording, editing, and metadata creation.

Why This Matters

Douglas Price, a founding member of the Alliance and CEO of Pro Sound Effects, emphasizes the need for protection: 'Music has its protectors. Voice has its protectors. Now sound will have protection of its own.' The Alliance's stance reflects the increasing value of sound effects in the digital age, where AI models can easily exploit these resources without compensation.

Pro Sound Effects, for instance, offers an AI training dataset of 1.27 million sounds, meticulously curated and annotated by professionals. This highlights the significant investment in creating high-quality sound libraries that AI developers might otherwise exploit without fair licensing.

What this means for you

As an independent artist or small label, the formation of the Professional Sound Alliance is a positive development. It signifies a growing recognition of the value of sound design and the need to protect it from unauthorized use. This could lead to more equitable licensing agreements and greater respect for the work you produce.

By standing with the Alliance, you contribute to a collective effort to ensure that sound effects are treated as the valuable creative assets they are, deserving of the same protection as music and voice.
