Raye Wins 2026 Mercury Prize for 'This Music May Contain Hope'

Independent Artist Triumphs at Prestigious Awards

Raye has made history by winning the 2026 Mercury Prize for her album 'This Music May Contain Hope', beating out industry heavyweights like Sir Paul McCartney, Florence and the Machine, and Olivia Dean. This marks a significant milestone for the independent artist, who was previously nominated for her 2023 album 'My 21st Century Blues' but didn't take home the prize.

A Celebration of Albums and Hope

During her acceptance speech in Newcastle, Raye emphasized the importance of albums in an industry often dominated by singles. She expressed gratitude for the recognition, particularly as someone who has navigated the challenges of the music industry independently. Raye also highlighted the theme of hope in her work, stating, 'Hope is something we all need,' and expressed her wish for the message to resonate with listeners.

The ceremony featured powerful performances by several nominees, including Raye's rendition of 'I Hate The Way I Look Today' with a full big band, Jade's 'Angel of My Dreams', Dean's 'Let Alone The One You Love', and Florence and the Machine's 'One Of the Greats'. Pulp also performed a track from the War Child Records compilation 'Help (2)' to support children in war zones.

What this means for you

Raye's win is a testament to the power of independent artistry and the impact of meaningful, album-focused music. It shows that with talent and perseverance, independent artists can achieve recognition alongside industry giants.

For independent musicians, this win serves as inspiration and proof that their work can stand out and be celebrated on a major platform.
