The Flaming Lips Unveil New Album 'The Teardrop Throbs'

Psych-Rock Pioneers Return with First Album in Seven Years
After a seven-year hiatus, The Flaming Lips are back with their 17th studio album, 'The Teardrop Throbs.' Set for release on January 22, 2024, on Jack White's Third Man Records, this marks their first album not on longtime label Warner and their first without multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd.
A New Era for the Psych-Rock Legends
Produced by the band alongside Taylor Johnson, Dave Fridmann, and Scott Booker, with additional production by Jon and Mike Fridmann, 'The Teardrop Throbs' promises to be a fresh chapter for the band. The album features the single 'God Will Control the Werewolves' and a sequel to 'Ego Tripping at the Gates of Hell' from their 2002 hit 'Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.' Frontman Wayne Coyne describes the new track as an exploration of 'Ego death' and the struggle for power, drawing inspiration from Syd Barrett's era with Pink Floyd.
Intimate Shows to Follow
Following the album's release, The Flaming Lips will perform at a series of intimate shows. These performances will give fans a chance to experience the new material in a more personal setting.
What this means for you
For independent artists, The Flaming Lips' move to Third Man Records is a reminder that even legendary acts can find new creative homes outside the major label system. It underscores the importance of exploring different paths and embracing change to keep your music fresh and exciting.
As Coyne's creative process shows, drawing inspiration from unexpected sources and personal experiences can lead to compelling and authentic music. Whether you're a fan or a fellow musician, there's much to learn from their fearless approach to creativity.
