Why Your Track Sounds Quieter Than Everyone Else on Spotify (And How to Fix It)

You upload the finished single. The first listener queues it in a playlist. And it sounds noticeably quieter than the song that just played before it. That is not your speakers, and it is not the mix engineer who let you down. It is loudness normalization, and every streaming platform on earth does it now.
The good news: fixing it is a mastering decision, not a career decision. Here is what is actually going on and what number to hit.
What loudness normalization actually does
Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, Amazon, Tidal, and TikTok all measure incoming tracks in LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale) and adjust playback volume so every song matches a house target. That target is different per platform, but every platform does it:
- Spotify: normalizes to about -14 LUFS integrated (default), with a “Loud” option at -11 LUFS
- Apple Music: about -16 LUFS
- YouTube Music: about -14 LUFS
- Amazon Music: about -14 LUFS
- Tidal: about -14 LUFS
If your track measures louder than the target (say -8 LUFS because you slammed a limiter to compete on radio), the platform turns you down until you hit the target. If your track measures quieter (say -20 LUFS because you were being conservative), Spotify does not turn you up beyond a small amount. You just sound quiet.
Why this matters more than most artists think
A track that plays back 3–4 dB quieter than the surrounding playlist gets skipped. Skips inside the first 30 seconds signal the algorithm to stop recommending you. That is not a theory — that is how Spotify’s recommender explicitly weights early-skip data, per their own engineering posts on recommendation systems.
The other direction hurts too. Master at -6 LUFS to compete on radio, and Spotify turns you down. Now your song not only loses the loudness advantage you paid a mastering engineer for, it also loses transient punch because the limiting you applied is baked in. You get the worst of both worlds.
What to actually deliver
Master to -14 LUFS integrated, with true peak at -1 dBTP. This is what every major distributor will accept, and what most modern mastering engineers target by default. If you are self-mastering, use the free ITU-R BS.1770 loudness meter in your DAW (Logic, Ableton Live 11+, Pro Tools, Reaper, and Studio One all ship one) to check.
If you want a version for every platform
Some artists deliver separate masters:
- Streaming master: -14 LUFS integrated, -1 dBTP true peak
- Apple master: -16 LUFS integrated, -1 dBTP
- CD / physical master: -9 to -11 LUFS integrated (louder is fine, no normalization on physical media)
Your distributor will accept multiple masters per release. Most artists do not bother and just upload the -14 LUFS version to every platform. That is fine.
Common mistake: mastering to -14 LUFS peak instead of integrated
“LUFS integrated” is the average loudness across the whole track. “LUFS momentary” or “peak” is the loudest 400ms window. If your meter is showing -14 for a peak reading, your average is way lower and your track will sound quiet. Always target the integrated number.
How to check what your master actually measures
Three free ways, from easiest to most accurate:
- Your DAW’s built-in meter. Play the whole song from start to finish (do not scrub or pause — the integrated measurement accumulates). Read the final value.
- Youlean Loudness Meter 2 (free version). Drop it on the master bus, hit play, let it run.
- Upload to a loudness-analysis service like Loudness Penalty, which shows how much each platform will turn your song down.
What none of this fixes
Loudness compliance does not make a poorly mixed song sound good. If the low end is muddy, or the vocals sit behind the beat, or the stereo image is a mono blob, hitting -14 LUFS just gives you a well-behaved mediocre master. The best loudness practice in the world is downstream of the mix.
If you cannot afford a professional mixing engineer yet, the two biggest wins for a bedroom mix are (a) a reference track from your genre played through the same speakers, and (b) a single trip to a treated room or good pair of headphones for the final decisions.

- Measure your last three released tracks against -14 LUFS integrated. If any are outside -14 ± 1, plan a re-master on the next release.
