As Korean culture has surged in popularity and became world-renowned, its success has sparked inevitable questions. What gets preserved, and what will change for the global audience? From K-pop’s meticulously polished export model to the commercialization of once-niche aesthetics, the tension between authenticity and mass appeal became a defining feature of the Korean wave. Despite this, not every creative was willing to smooth themselves into something easily marketable. Orange Flavored Cigarettes, an indie band from Seoul, refused to give up their distinct style. Garnering millions of hits on Spotify, their rise is rooted less in capturing the world’s interest than in being uniquely themselves.
The band’s three original members–Hotch, Dani, and Gurl lived together in the same neighborhood, where they shared a love of music and creative expression. Hotch and Gurl were fond of creating new melodies and instrumentations, while Dani offered to sing. This partnership created “Orange Flavored Cigarettes”, the band’s first single and namesake. It garnered over 2.5 million Spotify streams. The mixture of ethereal, melodic synth meshes with light-textured vocals has a quintessential sound for the band.
In their nearly five years of releasing music together, the band has added another member and released a consistent stream of music. “Noah,” the song followed their debut, also passed the million-stream threshold, and features a more melancholic, subtle vibe than its beachier predecessor. They have mostly stayed true to their original sound, but have changed things up. 2022’s energetic and vibrant “Pepper” features very reminiscent of Little Dragon or Arc De Soleil, with its wailing synths and bubbly musical form. “California,” their most recent single, features distinguished soul pop vocals from iconic guest stars Two Another. More guest features, as well as a full-length studio album, are next on OFC’s agenda.
