Playlist Ecosystems
How big playlists really work, independent curator strategies, and how artists build their own ecosystems.
Understanding the Playlist Landscape
Playlists are the radio of the streaming era. But not all playlists are equal, and the strategy for each type is different.
Three Types of Playlists
Editorial Playlists (Spotify-curated)
- Curated by Spotify's in-house team
- Pitched through Spotify for Artists (7+ days before release)
- Include genre, mood, instrumentation, and your story
- Examples: RapCaviar, Pollen, New Music Friday
Algorithmic Playlists (machine-generated)
- Release Radar, Discover Weekly, Daily Mixes
- Driven by listener behavior and engagement metrics
- You can't directly pitch, but strong engagement triggers inclusion
Independent/User Playlists (curator-run)
- Run by bloggers, influencers, and music enthusiasts
- Often more accessible than editorial playlists
- Can have massive followings (10K-500K+)
- Found via SubmitHub, PlaylistPush, or direct outreach
Independent Curator Strategy
- Research curators in your genre — look at playlist descriptions for submission emails
- Personalize every pitch — mention the playlist name, a specific song on it, and why your track fits
- Never mass-blast — curators talk to each other and blacklist spammers
- Follow up once — after 5-7 days, a brief follow-up is acceptable
- Build relationships — engage with curators on social media, share their playlists
Building Your Own Playlist Ecosystem
Smart artists create their own playlists to:
- Control a piece of the Spotify ecosystem
- Cross-promote with other artists
- Drive streams to your own catalog
Strategy:
- Create 3-5 mood/genre playlists with 50-100 songs each
- Include 2-3 of your own songs per playlist (don't overload)
- Fill the rest with similar artists your fans would like
- Update weekly with fresh tracks
- Promote the playlist (not just the song) on social media
Collaborative Playlists
Invite other artists in your genre to contribute. Benefits:
- Each contributor promotes the playlist to their audience
- Cross-pollination of fanbases
- Builds community and networking opportunities
