The Fan Conversion Funnel
Most artists think marketing is "post and pray." The reality is that fan conversion is a funnel — a deliberate system for moving people from awareness to superfandom.
The Five Stages
- Discovery — They hear your song for the first time (playlist, TikTok, ad, word of mouth)
- Interest — They check out your profile, listen to more songs
- Connection — They follow you on social, save your music
- Engagement — They interact with your content, join your community
- Superfan — They buy merch, attend shows, share your music, defend you online
Moving People Through the Funnel
Discovery → Interest:
- Strong Spotify bio with links and story
- Instagram/TikTok profile that immediately communicates who you are
- A "gateway song" that hooks new listeners
Interest → Connection:
- Call-to-action in every post ("save this song," "follow for more")
- Smart links that capture emails before redirecting to Spotify
- Consistent posting so when they find you, there's a world to explore
Connection → Engagement:
- Reply to every comment and DM (especially early on)
- Create community spaces (Discord, IG broadcast channel, group chat)
- Share exclusive content with followers (unreleased snippets, behind-the-scenes)
Engagement → Superfan:
- Email list with exclusive updates
- Early access to music, merch, tickets
- Recognition (shoutouts, featured fan content)
- Physical experiences (meetups, pop-ups, house shows)
Email & SMS Lists
Your email list is the only audience you truly own. Social platforms can change algorithms or disappear. Your email list travels with you.
Building your list:
- Gate exclusive content (unreleased tracks, stems, presets) behind email signup
- Use smart links that collect emails before redirecting to streaming
- Add signup forms to your website and link in bio
- Offer something valuable in exchange for the email
Email cadence:
- Don't spam. 2-4 emails per month is plenty.
- Mix value (free content, stories) with asks (stream this, buy this)
- Segment your list: casual fans vs superfans get different emails
Discord as a Fan Hub
Discord is the best platform for building a dedicated community:
- Create channels for different topics (music, art, general chat)
- Share exclusive content and early access
- Let fans interact with each other (community builds itself)
- Host listening parties and Q&As
